Functional Fitness: Why It’s Just Better

Updated: Aug 2, 2018

Whenever I visit commercial gyms, I observe a variety of different groups within the gym community; there is the cardio crowd, generally obsessed with caloric burn and creating some kind of sweat, there are the bodybuilders, who focus on muscle isolation and train almost entirely for muscle hypertrophy and aesthetics, there are the group fitness fanatics, the machine-dwellers, etc. Unfortunately what I see very little of is the functional fitness crowd—a modality that is a little trickier to define, a little harder to execute, and probably because of these reasons, much less common at your average gym. I’d like to talk about why more people should be incorporating this into their routine, what exactly it is, and why it is ultimately so much more effective for most people.
